In 1962, 23 year-old Horie Kenichi sailed from Osaka to San Francisco on a nineteen-foot, handmade sailboat. Based on his memoirs, Ichikawa’s riveting docudrama recreates the sailor’s three months “alone on the Pacific” in breathtaking color Cinemascope. Flashbacks reveal Horie’s youth and struggles to break out of his father’s shadow, while back on the boat, he struggles merely to survive against the elements. An epic yet intimate screenplay by Ichikawa’s wife Natto Wada (their last collaboration after more than 30 films) connects Horie’s journey to that of an entire Japanese generation, sailing through a great emptiness for unknown shores. |
