What could have been just a vehicle for an aging screen legend (Hasegawa) becomes an exhilarating revenge romp through the world of kabuki theatre in 19th-century Edo, equal parts sharp satire and delirious camp. Hasegawa plays Yukinojo, a prominent onnagata (female impersonator) determined to have vengeance for his parents’untimely death. While on tour to the capital, he spies the culprit (a pompous magistrate) and orchestrates an elaborate plot to destroy him. With masterful use of the 70-mm frame and vibrant color, An Actor’s Revenge shows Ichikawa at the top of his craft, effortlessly balancing art, pop and emotion.
