Great filmmakers can often recall a childhood moment that went a long way towards shaping them as an artist. In Childhoods, six of the twentieth century’s greatest — Ingmar Bergman, Alfred Hitchcock, Fritz Lang, Jean Renoir, Jacques Tati and Orson Welles — have anecdotal and biographical information combed in search of that defining moment. Among them, Yann Le Gal wonders how anti-Semitism in Austria influenced Lang; Ismael Ferroukhi ruminates on the lasting impression of Renoir’s country vacations; and Safy Nebbou imagines the impact of the arrival of a sister in Bergman’s home.
