Othello is given an ingenio us Bollywood makeover in director Vishal Bharadwaj's (the Bollywood Macbeth, Maqbool) Omkara, set in present day Uttar Pradesh. Gangster Omi Shukla, rejected for his caste, becomes entwined in romantic, political and professional conspiracies that set him on a path towards tragedy. Modernised without ever losing sight of Shakespeare's central themes, Omkara's transposition to India is seamless and affecting, and though well represented, the soundtrack is never allowed to distract. Featuring a standout performance by Saif Ali Khan in the Iago role as Langda.
