Bergman grapples with war, with a consciousness in and transcending world conflicts of the 1960s. Initially, war remains hauntingly distant, as a musician couple (Max Von Sydow and Liv Ullman) cling to pastoral refuge on an iconic island. Yet fear and destruction soon wash over them in the shifting maneuvers of vague invaders and government. Rather than exploring the interior dialogues of so many of his classic films, Shame poses its ethical dilemmas through the couples’ responses to soldiers, neighbors and nightmare scenarios they survive. Ultimately, changes in these protagonists and their relationship lead to an unforgettable concluding scene.
