A unique Bergman experience. His first film to gain international acclaim provides a charming, romantic ballet of fragile and intertwining relationships, linking past loves and new possibilities in the course of a single evening. A mature actress brings together two men who loved her, their wives and additional characters who embody a cross section of the Swedish figures whom Bergman would later explore with pain and melancholy – the bourgeois lawyer, the noble, the servant and the would-be priest. In a lush summer, these couples find time to pair and perhaps “repair” relations in sometimes surprising and delightful combinations.
