In the final days of WWII, soldier Mizushima (Yasui Shoji) becomes the harp-player for his dispirited regiment in Burma. After their surrender, however, Mizushima encounters more death and destruction. The last man standing, he disguises himself in a monk’s robes to bury the bodies of his comrades, and starts a spiritual journey in the process. Winning top prizes at the Venice Film Festival in 1957 and nominated for an Academy Award, this luminous film explores the chance of redemption in the ruins of war. Ichikawa’s first true masterpiece remains his most beloved. |
