South Korea revisits its ‘90s-era renaissance with this brutal thriller about a serial killer targeting prostitutes. Joong-ho is a disgraced cop-turned escort provider dealing with two missing call girls and a third that’s meeting a client who is a murderer. Playing with genre convention (the killer identified early in the film for starters), debut helmer Na’s critical film draws thrills from whether or not the apathetic, buck-passing police will be able to make a case in a fixed time—and whether Joong-ho will rediscover his humanity. |
