Literary giant Natsume Soseki wrote The Heart in 1914 as a lament for the “passing of an age”– the Meiji Emperor had died a few short years before, and the old values of Japanese society were quickly changing. In his adaptation, Ichikawa brings out this national conflict in the poignant story of Nobuchi, a college professor with a dark secret from his past. Though he hides his true self from his wife and colleagues, a loyal student slowly brings him to face his own guilt and responsibility. A complex portrait full of bitter humor and powerful regret. |
