In this stirring drama, Ichikawa takes on the taboo subject of the burakumin—Japan’s “low-caste” minority group. Though rarely discussed at this time, the burakumin still faced widespread discrimination, as shown by the journey of school-teacher Segawa. For most of his life he has passed as a “normal” Japanese man, and has the comfortable middle-class life that comes with it. But when an openly-burakumin writer friend is killed, Segawa decides to reveal his secret heritage and fight for acceptance, no matter the cost. |
