The second film in Bergman’s Faith Trilogy, this work allowed the director to work with familiar actors (Max Von Sydow, Gunnar Bjornstrand) to explore his recurrent questions of faith, doubt and silence. In his hands, this spare, modern story of a rural Swedish pastor, a handful of people and events of a single day becomes a profound experience. While the Swedish title, “The Communicants,” emphasizes religious connection and community (torn apart by fears, rejection and death), Winter Light underscores Bergman’s stunning camera work, staging and lighting as elements that make this tale eternal as well as deeply human.
